Account Types

Savings Accounts

  • Regular Shares: This is the primary membership savings account of the credit union, with a low $5 minimum balance. Each primary member has one vote to elect the Board of Directors.
  • Shares Plus: A money market savings account that allows you to earn more through tiered rates, based on your account balance. The minimum to open an account is $2,000. There are no fees for Higher rates are paid for balances of $5,000 to $49,999.99; balances of $50,000 to $99,999.99; balances of $100,000 to $499,999.99; and balances $500,000.00 and greater.
  • Christmas Savings: Your Christmas savings are paid out in October. There are no penalties for early withdrawals.
  • Trust Accounts: Individual or Joint Revocable Living Trusts are accepted subject to review. The Settler Trustee must be a member.

Savings Certificates

  • Share Certificates: Certificate terms are from 6 months to 3 years. The minimum balance is $500, with monthly interest payments.
  • Super Certificates: Certificate terms are from 6 months to 3 years. The minimum balance is $10,000 ($6,000 for 2- and 3-year terms), with higher rates and monthly interest payments.

Individual Retirement Accounts and Roth IRAs

  • Individual Retirement Accounts and Roth IRAs: Tiered rates allow you to earn more based on your balance.

Checking Accounts

  • Share Draft Accounts: Checking accounts that pay interest. A low minimum balance of $200 is required to avoid a $1.00 monthly fee.
  • Online Banking/BillPayer: This service allow Internet access to your account and allows you to view statements and history as well as transfer between share accounts and loan accounts and pay your bills. There is no monthly or transaction fee for this service.
  • Instant Phone Service: This allows you to transfer funds between accounts via the telephone. Toll free, 24 hour access to your account.
  • Debit VISA Card: This allows you to pay at retail outlets from your share draft account without writing a share draft.

Consumer Loans

  • Auto Loans: One of the lowest rates in town with convenient repayment terms up to 7 years for new with 100% financing of invoice and 6 years for used cars with 80% financing of retail blue book/appraisal. If rates decline you can refinance your loan to the current used car loan rate to lower your rate and payments.
  • Signature Loans: Rates are as low as 5.50% APR* with terms from 1 to 5 years. Consolidate your bills into one convenient repayment.
  • Share Secured Loans: Our lowest interest rate loan at 2.50% above our regular share dividend rate.

Home Equity Loans

  • Home Equity Line of Credit (Owner Occupied): Exclusive 18 year repayment terms with payments scheduled on the 10th of every month, our convenience of the Home Equity LOC is just a check or phone call away. Credit lines up to 70% loan to value, $350,000 maximum with available draw period of 8 years. There is no cost to maintain a Home Equity Line of credit, and you get the peace of mind knowing you have available equity to use.
  • Home Equity Line of Credit Secured by Rental Property: At l/2% higher than our Owner Occupied program, this line of credit repayment term is l2 years. Credit lines up to 70% loan to value, $350,000 maximum also with an available draw period of 8 years.
  • Home Equity Fixed (Owner Occupied): Get a fixed rate mortgage at a low cost. Our 20 year fixed Home Equity at a special low rate with no points is truly a member benefit. Loans up to 70% loan to value, $350,000 maximum.
  • Home Equity Fixed (Rental): At l/2% higher than our Owner Occupied program, this loan has a repayment term of 15 years. Loans up to 70% loan to value, maximum $350,000 and no points.

Other Line of Credit Loans

  • Share Draft/Overdraft Protection: Avoid embarrassing and costly overdraft fees with overdraft protection on your share draft account. The line of credit also allows a loan advance from ATMs.
  • Share Secured Share Draft/Overdraft Protection: You get the same low loan rate as share secured loans.

Fixed Rate Mortgages

  • 10 to 20 Year Mortgage Loan: We offer mortgage loans from 10 to 20 years at a fixed rate. Homes located in the State of Hawaii are eligible.
  • 30 Year Mortgage Loan: We also grant 30 year mortgage loans which are sold on the secondary market. Contact us for our daily rates on both of these mortgage loans.

Member Fee Schedule

Share Drafts (checking)

  • $200 Minimum Balance: $1.00 monthly fee (Does not apply to members below age 18 or age 55 and older).
  • Copy of Draft: $2.00 per item; subject to increase based on the delivery method.
  • Share Draft, VISA Convenience or Balance Consolidation Stop Payment; Loan Draft Stop Payment Fee: $24.00.
  • Draft Look-ups and Callbacks: $2.00 per item.
  • ACH Revocation: $24.00.
  • Assistance in Balancing Share Draft Account: $15.00 per hour; member must have attempted to balance account and must provide documentation.
  • Share Draft Orders: The credit union subsidizes $4.00 of all member-paid designs.

ATM Services

VISA Credit Cards

  • Late Fee: $25.00 on Credit Lines $1001 or greater.
  • Late Fee: $15.00 on Credit Lines $100 - $1,000.
  • Opt-In Over-the-Limit Fee: The fee for exceeding your credit limit is $25.00.
  • Returned Check Fee: $25.00 on Credit Lines $1001 or greater.
  • Returned Check Fee: $15.00 on Credit Line $100 - $1,000.

  • American Express Travelers Checks: No fee to purchase checks.
  • Domestic Western Union Commercial Money Order: $20.00 per item.
  • International Western Union Commercial Money Order: Prices varies per amount:

  • Long Distance Call to verify available funds or check issuance: $5.00 per call.
  • Dormant Accounts: Accounts with no current address that are dormant for 1 year will be billed $6.00 every three months as follows: November through January will be billed in February; February through April will be billed in May; May through July will be billing in August; August through October will be billed in November.

Reasons Why Your Money is Safe At Honolulu Federal Credit Union

  1. Accounts are Federally Insured up to $250,000 by the National Credit Union Administration (NCUA), an Agency of the Federal Government. Individual Retirement Accounts (IRAs) are insured separately up to $250,000. The National Credit Union Share Insurance Fund has a higher ratio of reserves to insured savings than the insurance fund for Banks and Thrifts.
  2. The credit union obtains an annual opinion audit.
  3. The credit union's Supervisory Committee conducts various internal control checks throughout the year.
  4. Federal Examiners from the NCUA periodically examine the credit union and prepare recommendations to the Board of Directors. They also receive quarterly financial updates of the credit union's progress, and prepare peer analysis for Board review.
  5. The credit union has over 10% in capital to protect against unforeseen losses.
  6. The Board of Directors actively evaluates the progress of the credit union. The Board also establishes Asset/Liability and Investment policies, which limit the credit union to safe and liquid investments.
  7. The credit union provides a forum to discuss its progress at the Annual Membership Meeting. The cooperative nature of the credit union provides for one member/one vote to elect the Board. Current directors are from the Internal Revenue Service, National Weather Service, the Small Business Administration, Department of Agriculture, and the Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Foundation.
  8. The Credit Union Volunteers and Staff are actively involved in leadership positions in the credit union movement in Hawaii. Warren Nakamura, our President/CEO, serves on the Board of Hawaii Rainbow Council of the Credit Union Executives Society. Wyman Au, our Vice Chairman, has perviously served for 10 years on the Board of the Hawaii Credit Union League.
